Cayton Flixton Carrs Wetland Project - JBA Consulting

Cayton Flixton Carrs Wetland Project

The aim of this partnership project in the Vale of Pickering is to re-establish a nationally-important wetland landscape through sensitive farm management.

The project's primary objectives are:-

  • » Create a range of valuable wetland habitats
  • » Provide sustainable alternatives to intensive agriculture
  • » Contribute to local and national biodiversity targets
  • » Conserve nationally important archaeological and paleo-environmental deposits
  • » Develop opportunities for wildlife based tourism
  • » Improve flood storage

JBA Consulting was commissioned by the Environment Agency and Scarborough Borough Council to assess the impact of actively raising groundwater levels on two proposed wetland restoration areas and the surrounding land.

Project outputs:-

  • » Development of a 3-layer groundwater model of the study area to investigate the hydrogeological interactions, especially with a nearby landfill site
  • » Development of a 2-d JFLOW flood inundation model for the study area to assess the interactions between the arterial drainage network and the in-field land surfaces
  • » Derivation of the simple water balance to quantify typical inflows and outflows of water to the proposed wetland restoration areas
  • » Topographic survey of the arterial ditch system, together with land surface levels in specific areas
  • » Initial assessment of water control measures to maintain desired conditions in the proposed wetland restoration areas
