Piazza planned for Salts Mill in the heart of the World Heritage Site

Maslen Environmental are currently working on a prestigious project for the design of a new piazza within the Salt’s Mill complex that forms part of the Saltaire World Heritage Site.

The site of the piazza is a former open space within the mill which in the early 20th century the space was covered over by the construction of a number of structural concrete floors and a glass roof to assist with the transfer of materials from one part of the manufacturing process to another.

Maslen Environmental's design will see the space opened up by removing the glazed roof and concrete floors and the creation of three different level spaces across the sloping site with space for shops, cafes, outdoor seating areas and a dramatic and eye-catching performing arts space at the heart of the scheme.

Newly restored St Peters features major exhibition

The restoration of St Peter’s Church, Barton upon Humber, with its magnificent Anglo-Saxon tower has been achieved with funding support from Yorkshire Forward and English Heritage as part of the South Humber Bank Heritage Tourism Project.

Dr Simon Thurley, Chief Executive of English Heritage re-opened St Peter’s to the public on 24 May 2007 and paid tribute to everyone who has worked hard to realise the restoration of the Church.

Studies of the remains have given a rare opportunity to look at changes in health, life expectancy and diet of the local community over the part 1,000 years.

The Church is one of five projects managed by Maslen Environmental as part of a wider Heritage and Tourism project on the south bank of the Humber in North Lincolnshire.

The Church is now open to the public – further details available from English Heritage: 01652 635932

Mosslands visioning work completed

Our vision for the Mosslands was presented to the Mosslands Action Group in April 2007. The mosslands, 6,600ha of land between Salford, Warrington and Wigan, were once an extensive area of lowland raised bog. Following "reclaimed" for agriculture and peat mineral extraction only remnants of this habitat remain and these areas have international designations to protect and enhance their biodiversity value. Working with a team including JBA Consulting (hydrology, hydrgeology and wetland restoration experts) and ADAS (agricultural advisors), we developed the vision using integrated landscape planning techniques aimed at securing a sustainable future for this unique landscape which balances the interests of agriculture, recreation, biodiversity and mineral extraction.

Maslen Environmental has been involved in the development of this pioneering project with the Environment Agency, English Nature and North Lincolnshire Council since 2001. Amongst other Alkborough related activities Maslens established transnational co-operation between this project and similar projects in Europe, examining sustainable land uses in estuaries – the FRaME project. www.frameproject.org
